Police recover stolen Camry, bust car theft ring in Ondo

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Detectives of the Ondo State Police Command have recovered a stolen Toyota Camry and uncovered a car theft syndicate said to be operating across parts of the state.

Police spokesman DSP Olushola Ayanlade, in a statement, said the vehicle, a golden 2010 unregistered Toyota Camry, was stolen in July from a residence in the Osi area of Akure.

The victim, Madam Akomolafe Bolanle, narrated how her home was burgled at about 4 a.m. when the thieves broke in, stole her car keys, and escaped with the vehicle and other personal items.

According to the police, weeks of investigation led operatives to Owo, where the car was discovered. It had been repainted blue, an attempt believed to have been made to disguise its identity.

The vehicle was found in the possession of one Fagbote Michael Olamilekan, who was promptly arrested. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to buying the car for ₦4 million from a man identified only as Adewumi, now on the run.

Investigators also uncovered that the repainting was done in collaboration with a painter, who has since fled.

Ayanlade, while warning those in the automobile trade, said, “Anyone found aiding criminals, knowingly or otherwise, will face prosecution.”

Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal praised the officers for their diligence and assured residents of the Command’s commitment to keeping the state safe.
