Sanwo-Olu commissions fresh food hub in Agege, targets N5bn transactions annually

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday commissioned the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Agege, a facility designed to strengthen food security, improve market access and enhance the state’s food supply chain.
Sanwo-Olu, who commissioned the facility at Pen Cinema, said the project was part of the administration’s broader Food Systems Transformation Agenda aimed at making food distribution more efficient, affordable and resilient.
He said the state could not address food security by focusing solely on agricultural production, noting that more than 70% of food consumed in Lagos is produced outside the state and transported through fragmented supply chains.
Accordingly, the governor said the government was developing an interconnected network of food hubs to improve the movement of food from farms to markets and ultimately to consumers.
Sanwo-Olu identified the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, as the flagship project in the network, adding that the facility, equipped with cold and dry storage, processing centres, laboratories, warehouses and logistics bays, was at an advanced stage and would be commissioned before the end of his administration.
The Agege facility, the latest addition to the network after the Mushin Fresh Food Hub commissioned in 2023 and the Abijo hub commissioned earlier this year, is expected to facilitate more than N5 billion in food transactions annually, according to Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya.
Olusanya said the approximately 7,000-square-metre facility, developed in partnership with Origin Tech Group, has a 4,000-square-metre trading floor for 350 to 400 vendors, dry and cold storage facilities, a seafood section, parking for 80 to 90 vehicles and 10 electric vehicle charging points, adding that full operations would begin in six weeks.
She said the facility was backed by a 351-page operating framework covering produce reception, quality control, storage, inventory management, sanitation, waste management and trading spaces, while the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, described the project as a new economic opportunity and a stronger food system for the community.
