Sanwo-Olu urges Nigerians to uphold patriotism, founding values at 66th anniversary

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerians, particularly Lagos residents, to uphold the nation’s founding values of patriotism, resilience and determination as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary.
Sanwo-Olu, who is also chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, said Nigeria’s progress depends on the collective efforts of its citizens, urging them to respond to the country’s challenges with renewed faith, responsible citizenship and collective action.
The governor made the call in an Independence Day message issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, describing the anniversary as a reminder of Nigeria’s hard-earned freedom and a call to renewed commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
He praised the country’s founding fathers, patriots and successive public office holders for their contributions to keeping Nigeria united despite its religious, ethnic and cultural differences since independence in 1960.
Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to demonstrate patriotism beyond Independence Day celebrations by promoting social cohesion, respecting the rights of others and contributing meaningfully to national development through their daily actions.
He said Nigeria had experienced both progress and difficult periods over the past 66 years, but its ability to withstand adversity remained a reason for optimism about the country’s future.
The governor urged citizens to believe in Nigeria’s potential and work with leaders to build the country they desire, stressing that the nation’s diversity should be regarded as a source of strength rather than division.
“As we celebrate the 66th Independence anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to doing what is right, work with our leaders for a better country and walk in unity as one family,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that the future of Nigeria would be shaped by the choices Nigerians make together.
