SDP’s Adebayo pushes cooperative federalism ahead of 2027 elections

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP),  Prince Adewole Adebayo, has advocated “cooperative federalism” to improve governance in Nigeria.

Speaking during a television interview, Adebayo accused the Federal Government of failing to address poverty, insecurity and other constitutional responsibilities, including those under Section 162 and the Appropriation Act.

He said government should prioritise citizens’ security and welfare, arguing that rising revenue should be assessed against Nigerians’ purchasing power.

Under his proposed model, federal and state governments would coordinate development projects in roads, education, healthcare, agriculture and security, regardless of political differences.

He said projects such as federal and state roads should be planned to connect, while federal, state and local security agencies should work together to combat crime.

The SDP candidate said his Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity programme would focus on reducing poverty and insecurity and expanding access to food, housing, education, healthcare and employment.

He also expressed support for opposition cooperation ahead of the 2027 election, saying he would accept another presidential candidate if a credible process produced one.

Adebayo urged political actors to prioritise the national interest over personal entitlement to the presidential ticket.
