Senate scrutiny of SEDC boss reflects Tinubu’s commitment to transparency — Oluwo

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has commended the Senate’s scrutiny of heads of government agencies, describing the exercise as a demonstration of transparency and accountability under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The monarch, in a statement made available to newsmen by his press secretary, Alli Ibrahim, said he was impressed by the live television coverage of the Senate committee’s engagement with the Managing Director of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Mark Okoye, and other officials of government agencies.

Oba Akanbi said the public screening and questioning of officials entrusted with public resources was a major boost to Nigeria’s image and would help promote transparency and accountability in public service.

“I am proud that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is restoring trust, openness, transparency and accountability by asking questions of officials saddled with public trust,” he said.

The traditional ruler noted that scrutiny of public office holders would discourage corrupt practices, adding that Nigeria could regain its integrity and international credibility through a successful fight against corruption.

Oluwo further argued that tackling corruption would also help address insecurity in the country, saying, “For insecurity to end, we must first kill corruption. A direct checkmate of corruption is an indirect decimation of banditry. Tinubu is fighting both”.

Oba Akanbi urged that the legislature be further strengthened to perform its oversight responsibilities effectively and suggested the establishment of an independent watchdog to investigate and sanction corrupt lawmakers.

The monarch also called on Nigerians to support security agencies by providing useful intelligence, stressing that collective efforts were needed to combat insecurity across the country.
