Tegbe calls for sustainable financing to power Nigeria’s healthcare facilities
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, on Monday called on local and international investors to adopt sustainable financing models for the electrification of healthcare facilities across Nigeria, describing the sector as one of the most attractive investment opportunities on the African continent.
Tegbe made the call at the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Forum held under the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI) at the Lagos Civic Centre, Victoria Island.
The forum, convened by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with UK PACT, brought together representatives of federal and state governments, chief medical directors, development partners and private sector leaders to explore investment opportunities in healthcare electrification.
Speaking at the event, the minister said reliable electricity was a critical component of effective healthcare delivery.
“Reliable electricity is not merely an infrastructure requirement; it is a fundamental pillar of healthcare delivery,” Tegbe said.
He noted that the objectives of the NPHI align with ongoing power sector reforms and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the initiative offers an opportunity to integrate energy planning into health infrastructure development while strengthening collaboration among stakeholders.
According to him, Nigeria’s more than 35,000 registered healthcare facilities across primary, secondary and tertiary levels represent a significant pipeline of bankable projects capable of attracting both local and international investment.
“The healthcare sector presents substantial opportunities for investment in solar mini-grids, hybrid energy systems, battery storage, energy efficiency technologies, smart metering, facility energy management platforms, operations and maintenance services, and climate-resilient infrastructure,” he said.
Tegbe assured investors of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the necessary policy support and institutional coordination to ensure the success of the initiative.
