Tinubu celebrates literary icon Femi Osofisan at 80

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated acclaimed playwright, scholar and literary icon, Professor Femi Osofisan, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

In a statement personally signed by the spokesperson to the President, Bayo Onanuga on Monday, Tinubu described Osofisan as one of Nigeria’s most gifted intellectuals whose creativity and scholarship have significantly enriched society.

According to the President, Osofisan has distinguished himself as a playwright, poet, novelist, teacher, scholar, emeritus professor and newspaper columnist, dedicating his life and works to confronting societal challenges and advocating moral renewal.

Tinubu noted that Osofisan’s acclaimed novella Maami inspired the 2011 Nigerian drama film of the same title, produced and directed by renowned filmmaker Tunde Kelani.

Born in Erunwon, Ogun State, Osofisan attended Government College, Ibadan, before proceeding to the University of Ibadan, where he studied French. He later pursued graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris.

The celebrated academic served in various teaching positions at the University of Ibadan and retired as a professor. In recognition of his contributions to theatre and literary arts, he received the prestigious Thalia Prize from the International Association of Theatre Critics in 2016.

President Tinubu praised Osofisan’s enduring legacy, describing his life and achievements as a testament to service, dedication and hard work.

“I warmly congratulate this literary colossus as he turns 80 on June 16. His life and accomplishments are a demonstration of service, dedication and hard work,” the President said.
