Tinubu promises electricity reforms, targets 1,600MW grid boost

President Bola Tinubu has highlighted Nigeria’s lingering electricity challenges, citing debts, weak transmission infrastructure and supply constraints, while announcing plans to strengthen the national grid.
Speaking on Friday at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, the President said his administration is working to resolve structural problems affecting stable power supply.
Tinubu admitted that the electricity sector still faces serious legacy issues despite progress recorded in other sectors of the economy.
“Despite these achievements, we continue to face legacy issues such as electricity supply, debts to GENCOs and gas suppliers, and antiquated transmission infrastructure,” he said.
The President said the Federal Government plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to help improve electricity transmission and expand supply capacity.
According to him, the initiative is expected to significantly strengthen the grid.
“Recently, we announced plans to address this by establishing the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), which will inject approximately 1,600 megawatts into a new grid corridor,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu stressed that fixing the power sector remains essential to economic growth and national development, noting that infrastructure reforms are central to his administration’s economic agenda.
