Tinubu reaffirms commitment to security, says 13,000 terrorists neutralised in one year
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the country, stressing that sustainable democracy can only thrive in a secure environment.
In a nationwide address to Nigerians on Friday, the President expressed concern over the plight of children reportedly held captive in parts of Borno State, declaring that “democracy without security is a mirage.”
Speaking further, Tinubu highlighted measures taken by his administration to tackle insecurity, including the recruitment of 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military personnel, as well as the allocation of approximately ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security in the 2026 budget.
According to the President, the government’s security efforts are beginning to yield results, with more than 13,000 terrorists neutralised within the past year.
Reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey, Tinubu paid tribute to individuals and groups who contributed to the struggle for democratic governance.
“Today, we honour the resilience of Nigerians who refused to surrender their faith in freedom and the courage of those who stood firm against intimidation. We pay tribute to patriots who endured persecution, imprisonment, exile and even death so that future generations could enjoy democracy,” he said.
The President also commended labour leaders, journalists, activists, students, women, professionals, political leaders and members of the armed forces, both living and deceased, for their contributions to the development and preservation of Nigeria’s democracy.
