Video of police officers manhandling corp member in Ekiti sparks outrage

By Boye Oyeyemi

A video circulating on social media has triggered public anger after some officers of the Nigeria Police Force were seen forcefully pulling a member of the National Youth Service Corps in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

In the footage, corps members were seen being dragged by uniformed policemen near a school while passersby looked on. Two other corps members were also spotted at the scene, watching as the incident unfolded without intervention.

The eyewitness who recorded the video openly criticised the officers, accusing them of profiling and harassing young Nigerians.

“They cannot just sight a young man with a car because they don’t have one,” he said in Yoruba.

“They will work for years and still have nothing to show for it. All they know is to harass people,” he added.

He further alleged that the policemen attempted to seize his phone while he was filming the incident. “They want to collect my phone. Is it your father that bought it for me?” he queried.

As tensions rose, other voices in the background urged him to keep recording, while he warned the corps member against going with the officers, shouting, “Don’t follow them anywhere.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command regarding the issue proved abortive. ‎
