Wike defends Nigeria’s democracy, dismisses opposition coalition as selfish

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims by some opposition figures that democracy is failing in Nigeria, insisting that the country’s democratic system remains functional despite its challenges.

Wike made the remarks on Monday in Abuja, where he addressed concerns about the state of governance and democratic institutions in the country.

According to the former Rivers State governor, no democratic system is perfect, noting that even established democracies around the world contend with electoral disputes and governance challenges.

He cited the United States as an example, saying allegations of election rigging and irregularities have also surfaced in the world’s largest democracy, yet its democratic system continues to function.

The minister argued that while Nigeria faces numerous political and economic challenges, the solution lies in strong and courageous leadership rather than persistent criticism of democratic institutions.

Wike also took a swipe at opposition coalitions, describing them as alliances driven by personal ambition rather than shared ideology or a coherent vision for national development.

“The so-called coalition and the new faces of democracy have confirmed my doubt. They don’t exist. They are only after their selfish gains,” he said.

He added that Nigeria requires leaders who are prepared to confront challenges directly, stressing that the country does not need politicians who move from one party to another in pursuit of personal interests.
