LPPC approves 68 lawyers for SAN rank, swearing-in set for October

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on 68 legal practitioners.
The decision was taken at the committee’s 174th plenary session held on Thursday under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi, announced the development in a statement, explaining that the SAN rank is awarded to legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction either as courtroom advocates or as academics who have made significant contributions to legal scholarship.
Among those approved for elevation is the Attorney-General of Kwara State, Senior Sulyman Ibrahim.
The committee said all shortlisted prospective SAN conferees are required to attend and successfully complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme, in line with the directive of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), before the rank can be formally conferred.
The LPPC also warned the successful candidates against publishing or encouraging the publication of advertisements, congratulatory messages or goodwill notices relating to their nomination or conferment.
It said the directive is in line with paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023, adding that any violation could attract sanctions.
The swearing-in ceremony for the 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria is scheduled to hold on October 12, 2026. The list comprises 67 advocates and one academic, Prof. Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri.
