Sarah Alade’s return to JP Morgan amid shaping Nigeria’s monetary, banking sector policies

The former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and acting governor in 2014, Sarah Omotunde Alade has been appointed an independent non-executive director of JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, bringing decades of experience in monetary policy, financial markets and economic management to the proposed institution.

Alade’s appointment comes as JPMorgan seeks to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria, a move that could deepen competition in corporate and investment banking and expand the range of services available to businesses and institutional clients.

Her experience at the CBN, where she spent 24 years before retiring in March 2017, places her among the experienced Nigerian economic policymakers to join the governance structure of the proposed merchant bank.

Her responsibilities as an independent non-executive director will centre on board-level oversight and strategic guidance rather than the day-to-day management of the institution.

Alade began her professional career in 1977 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in Ilorin, Kwara State, before moving into academia at the University of Ilorin, where she lectured in accounting, finance and related disciplines.

She joined the CBN in 1993 as an assistant director in the Research Department, beginning a career that would place her at the centre of Nigeria’s monetary and financial policy administration.

During her tenure at the apex bank, she headed the State Government Finance Office, Federal Government Finance Office and Fiscal Analysis Division, gaining experience in public-sector finance and economic analysis.

In May 2004, she became director of Banking Operations, a position that expanded her responsibilities into banking administration and payment systems. She chaired the board of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) and served as secretary of the National Payments System Committee.

These roles gave her experience across financial infrastructure, banking operations and the institutional mechanisms supporting Nigeria’s financial system.

Shaping monetary policy at the CBN

Alade was appointed deputy governor in charge of Economic Policy on March 26, 2007. Her portfolio covered economic research, monetary policy, trade and exchange, statistics and financial markets.

The position placed her within the CBN’s senior leadership at a time when monetary policy, exchange-rate management and financial-sector stability were central to Nigeria’s economic policy debates.

On February 20, 2014, she became acting governor of the CBN following the removal of then governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. She held the position until a substantive governor was appointed.

Her work at the apex bank included contributions to monetary and credit policy proposals, Nigeria’s medium-term economic programme and engagements with the International Monetary Fund on economic policy programmes.

She retired from the CBN in March 2017, concluding a career that spanned research, banking operations and senior monetary policy leadership. Following her retirement from the CBN, Alade returned to public service in an advisory capacity.

In November 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed her Special Adviser to the President on Finance and the Economy, with her office domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

The appointment drew on her experience in economic policy formulation, public finance and financial-sector administration.

Alade has also been associated with the African Economic Research Consortium, where she served on the board and chaired its Programme Committee. Her professional affiliations include the Nigerian Economic Society and other financial and economic institutions. Alade holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, obtained in 1976.

She earned a Master of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia, in 1983, followed by a PhD in Management Science, specialising in Operations Research, from the University of Ilorin in 1991.
