Tinubu determined to fix Nigeria’s power sector, APC campaign council says
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has said President Bola Tinubu will present his administration’s achievements and outstanding challenges in the power sector to Nigerians as he seeks re-election in 2027.
The council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, said this in a statement on Sunday while defending Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promise to end estimated electricity billing and ensure stable power supply.
Alake said the President’s pledge should be assessed in its full context, noting that Tinubu had also promised to provide adequate explanations to Nigerians if his administration failed to fulfil the commitment before seeking a second term.
At a meeting with members of the Organised Private Sector in Lagos ahead of the 2023 general elections, Tinubu had promised to ensure reliable electricity supply and end estimated billing.
“Whichever way, by all means necessary, you will have electricity, and you will not pay for estimated bills anymore. A promise made will be a promise kept,” Tinubu had said.
He added that Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on the promise, unless he provided adequate reasons for his inability to do so.
However, Alake said the administration had taken several steps towards addressing the longstanding challenges in the electricity sector since assuming office in May 2023.
According to him, Tinubu signed the Electricity Act, 2023, on June 9, less than two weeks after assuming office, allowing state governments to participate in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
He listed Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Ekiti, Oyo, Kaduna and Niger as states that had established their electricity regulatory agencies to take advantage of the legislation and attract private investment.
