Sanwo-Olu backs Hamzat’s governorship ambition, urges support from Lagosians

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has thrown his weight behind his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, urging residents to support his ambition to succeed him as governor in 2027.

Sanwo-Olu made the call on Friday at the KOH Manifesto unveiling in Lagos, while recounting Hamzat’s contributions to his administration and expressing confidence in his ability to lead the state.

The governor described Hamzat as a loyal and dependable partner who had remained committed to the administration’s vision throughout their seven years in office.

According to him, Hamzat demonstrated political maturity in 2018 when he stepped down from the governorship race following appeals by leaders of the All Progressives Congress to allow Sanwo-Olu emerge as the party’s candidate.

Sanwo-Olu said his deputy had consistently demonstrated his capacity for leadership, having served in different administrations and occupied strategic positions in the Lagos State Government.

He further urged Lagos residents to support Hamzat, stressing that his experience and understanding of the state’s governance structure positioned him to sustain its development.

The governor also recalled that more than 657,000 party faithful voted for Hamzat across the state’s wards and local government areas on May 21, 2026, urging them to translate their support into continued political backing by promoting the party’s governorship candidate “from street to street, ward to ward, and door to door.”

The event attracted former governors of Lagos State, including Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, members of the Governance Advisory Council, serving and former lawmakers, traditional rulers and other political leaders.
