Premier League: Havertz strike sinks Liverpool as Arsenal extend lead

By Tosin Omojola

Arsenal capitalised on Manchester City’s defeat to Brighton to secure a hard-fought victory over Liverpool, moving three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Back-to-back defeats for City presented the Gunners with an opportunity to strengthen their grip on the title race, but they faced a stern test against an improving Liverpool side.

Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Declan Rice delivered a ball across the face of goal, which Kai Havertz converted at the far post.

The visitors, however, had to withstand sustained pressure from Liverpool for the remainder of the first half as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.

David Raya narrowly beat Virgil van Dijk’s flick-on to prevent Alexander Isak from pouncing, while Liverpool had two penalty appeals turned down. Florian Wirtz also came close to drawing the hosts level when his free-kick struck the crossbar.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession early in the second half, but Arsenal’s defence became increasingly organised, limiting the hosts’ opportunities.

The introduction of Myles Lewis-Skelly helped Arsenal regain control in the closing stages. Alisson, however, produced a superb one-handed save to deny Christos Tzolis, whose first-time effort towards the far corner threatened to double the visitors’ lead.

Havertz’s early strike ultimately proved decisive, securing Arsenal’s first Premier League victory at Liverpool since 2012. The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth in the table, nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.
