Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel dies after collision with goalkeeper

Spanish football club CD Tenerife has announced the death of its striker, Jesus de Miguel, following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a league match on Monday.

The incident occurred during the encounter, which was tied at 2-2, when De Miguel went for the ball as Owono rushed out of goal, resulting in a heavy collision involving the players’ heads and upper bodies.

Owono was sent off following the incident, while the referee abandoned the match. Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to attend to De Miguel, who reportedly suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital in an ambulance.

Although medical personnel were able to revive him, the striker remained in critical condition. He was initially reported to be stable but serious before the club confirmed his death on Tuesday morning.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” Tenerife said in a statement.

The club added that De Miguel’s family had thanked supporters for their messages of sympathy and requested privacy during the difficult period.

The Spanish Football Federation subsequently postponed two Copa del Rey fixtures and a Copa de la Reina match following the incident. Meanwhile, authorities in the Canary Islands have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, describing it as a routine procedure in cases involving non-natural deaths.

De Miguel, who previously played for several clubs in Spain, joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract. He scored 11 goals in 29 appearances and was survived by his young daughter.
