Owena Dam: Ondo targets pipe-borne water supply to seven LGs

The Ondo State Government has taken another step towards restoring regular pipe-borne water supply to seven local government areas following the arrival of equipment and the first batch of pipes for the rehabilitation of the Owena Multipurpose Dam Water Treatment Plant.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa inspected the materials delivered by CGC Nigeria Limited at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure, on Wednesday, and urged the contractor to stick to the project schedule and approved technical standards.

The equipment, procured from China, will be used for the rehabilitation of the Owena treatment plant and expansion of Akure’s water infrastructure. The project also includes an 800mm transmission pipeline to Akure, a new reservoir at Oke Aro, expansion of distribution networks and rehabilitation of three existing reservoirs at Okebola.

Aiyedatiwa described the arrival of the materials as an important step towards fulfilling his administration’s promise to provide residents with clean and reliable water. He said the project must be completed without unnecessary delays.

“We don’t want to make these promises without fulfilment. And this is one of the fulfilments of those promises, by providing healthy, clean, pipe-borne water for our people to drink,” the governor said.

He recalled that the project was flagged off at the Owena Multipurpose Dam on December 9, 2025. It is being implemented by the Ondo State Water Corporation with support from the French Development Agency and the African Development Bank.

The Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Victoria Adetoye, said the first phase would cover six local government areas in the Central Senatorial District and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo in the South. She expressed hope that residents of the seven benefiting councils would have running water in their homes by the same period next year.

Adetoye said the arrival of the materials showed that the project was taking shape, while the Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Wang Peng, assured the state government that the company would complete the work on schedule and meet the required quality standards.
