By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has expressed the appreciation of residents to President Bola Tinubu over the commencement of construction work on the Oko Olowo Bridge.
In a statement on Thursday, AbdulRazaq said the project demonstrated the president’s commitment to the welfare and safety of residents, particularly those who live in or travel through the area.
The governor said the state government had advocated the reconstruction of the bridge since 2019 and renewed its efforts after Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
He recalled visiting the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in 2024 alongside Kogi Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and members of the National Assembly to push for the urgent construction of the bridge and the Ilorin-Lokoja Road through Omu Aran.
AbdulRazaq said Umahi assured the state during a visit in October 2025 that work on the bridge would begin soon, describing the commencement as the fulfilment of a long-standing expectation.
He said the project would provide relief to tens of thousands of residents who live along the axis or regularly use the road, adding that it would help protect lives and property.
The governor also appealed to Umahi to expedite work on other requests from the state, particularly the Ilorin-Lokoja Road through Omu Aran, for the benefit of residents.
AbdulRazaq described the bridge project as one of the dividends of democracy enjoyed by the state and said it would strengthen support for Tinubu and other All Progressives Congress candidates in the coming election.
