Awoniyi returns as 20 Super Eagles players arrive in Uyo
Taiwo Awoniyi has returned to the Super Eagles for the first time since 2024 as Nigeria intensifies preparations for Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Madagascar, with 20 players now in camp in Uyo.
Awoniyi is among the attacking options available to head coach Eric Chelle, alongside Moses Simon, Akor Adams, George Ilenikhena, Ademola Lookman and Tolu Arokodare.
The first batch of players is expected to participate in Tuesday’s training session as Chelle begins preparations for the Group C encounter.
The midfielders in camp are Alex Iwobi, Emmanuel Fernandez, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka and Chibuike Nwaiwu, while the defenders are Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Benjamin Fredericks, Moses Usor, Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Arthur Okonkwo and Isaac James are the two goalkeepers currently in camp.
The Super Eagles are still expecting the arrival of Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chukwueze and first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali as preparations continue.
Nigeria will face Madagascar on Friday, September 25, in their latest 2027 AFCON qualifying fixture.
With 20 players already in Uyo and three more expected, the Super Eagles are set to intensify training as Chelle works to build the team for the crucial qualifying encounter.
