BREAKING: DLA presidential aspirant dumps party over alleged imposition plot

A former presidential aspirant of the Democratic Leadership Alliance, Abisayo Busari-Akinnadeju, has resigned from the party over what she described as an attempt to impose a consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Busari-Akinnadeju, a lawyer and chartered arbitrator, announced her resignation in a statement obtained by Western Post on Friday, stating that she could no longer remain in a political party where members were allegedly denied the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.

She disclosed that she had paid the required nomination fee and was cleared to contest the party’s presidential primary before becoming the subject of a disciplinary process linked to a private WhatsApp message.

The former aspirant also alleged that the party’s state chairmen were instructed not to attend the presidential primary but instead submit figures to the national secretariat to enable the emergence of a consensus candidate.

She said, “On a day Nigeria celebrates democracy and the people’s right to elect their leaders, I cannot continue in a party that refuses to uphold those same principles internally.”

“I entered the race believing there would be a fair contest, but it became clear that the process had already been decided.”

Busari-Akinnadeju maintained that she never agreed to any consensus arrangement, insisting that the Electoral Act requires the consent of all cleared aspirants before such a decision can be reached.

Speaking on her next move, she said she would return to civic advocacy through the Dare Agenda and the #DareNigeria movement.
