Court sentences two to death for armed robbery in Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced two men, Ojo Tosin Olasunkanmi and Obamoyegun Dele, to death by hanging for conspiracy and armed robbery.

The trial judge, Justice Bamidele Omotoso, delivered the verdict after finding the defendants guilty of the offences brought against them. The charges, first filed in January 2020 and later amended in March 2025, bordered on conspiracy and armed robbery under the Robbery and Firearms Act.

The convicts were initially arraigned alongside a third defendant, Adewale David, who died during the course of the trial.

According to the prosecution, the convicts carried out the attack on August 11, 2018, in Ido-Ekiti, where they robbed residents of cash and valuables while armed with dangerous weapons.

A victim, Ojo Bosede, told the court that the assailants posed as officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency before forcing their way into the house. She said, “They claimed they came based on information about drugs, but when we refused to open the gate, they scaled the fence and broke in.”

The prosecution counsel, O.B. Ayeleso, presented nine witnesses and several exhibits to establish the case against the defendants.

Delivering judgment, Justice Omotoso ruled, “I resolve all issues in favour of the prosecution and find the defendants guilty as charged.”

“The sentence of this court is that the defendants be hanged by the neck until they are dead,” he added.
