FCT police rescue abandoned newborn, arrest mother
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a day-old baby abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind an uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape.
In a press statement signed by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, the Command disclosed that officers from the Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) of the Mpape Division responded to a distress call on January 3, 2025, at around 10:00 AM. Upon arrival, they discovered the newborn wrapped in cloth and immediately rescued the baby.
The child was taken to Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where a medical evaluation confirmed the baby was in stable condition.
Acting on a tip-off from the community, the police arrested the baby’s mother, identified as Khadija Ali. During interrogation, Ali admitted to abandoning the child, citing her inability to care for the baby after her husband deserted her.
The FCT Police Command condemned the act of child abandonment, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding society’s most vulnerable.
It announced that the baby would be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care. Meanwhile, Ali will face prosecution under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 after investigations are concluded.
The Command expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities or emergencies.
