FRSC launches three-day enforcement drive to curb road accidents in Ondo

The Federal Road Safety Corps has commenced a three-day special enforcement operation across Ondo State aimed at reducing road traffic crashes by tackling major traffic violations on highways.

The Ondo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, disclosed this on Monday in Akure during the inauguration of the exercise, tagged Operation Sanity. According to him, the operation would target specific traffic offences responsible for most crashes in the state.

Ibitoye noted that the exercise is based on findings from the command’s research, which identified recurring violations contributing significantly to road accidents.

He explained that officers would concentrate on enforcing compliance with traffic regulations rather than conducting routine road safety activities.

He warned that motorists caught violating traffic laws, particularly those involved in speeding, dangerous driving and other offences, would be arrested, fined and sanctioned in line with existing regulations.

“The operation is focused on speed violations, dangerous driving, overloading, tyre-related offences, driving under the influence of alcohol, seat belt violations, use of mobile phones while driving, route violations and vehicles emitting excessive smoke,” he said.

Furthermore, the commander revealed that the exercise will also educate motorists on the dangers of overloading and the risks it poses to road users.

“Overloading not only damages vehicles but also weakens the roads and endangers the lives of passengers,” he added.

The sector commander therefore urged drivers to remain patient behind the wheel, obey traffic regulations and avoid distractions that could result in preventable crashes.
