Gateway Games: Abiodun receives Unity Torch, reaffirms Ogun’s readiness

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday received the Unity Torch in preparation for the commencement of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024.
The torch was presented to the governor by Dorcas Adesokan, winner of two gold medals at the 2014 African Youth Games and champion in women’s singles and doubles, at the City Gate along the Abeokuta–Siun–Sagamu Expressway.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun said the torch, which had journeyed across various states after being handed to the National Sports Commission by President Bola Tinubu, represents the collective aspirations of Nigerians.

“The Unity Torch, which began its journey across the federation in March, symbolizes more than just the forthcoming Gateway Games. It embodies our shared hopes as a nation where diversity strengthens unity and where our youth are empowered to excel on the global stage,” he said.
He added that the torch reflects Ogun State’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage, describing it as “a beacon of unity, peace, and the enduring spirit of every Nigerian.”

Governor Abiodun emphasized that beyond promoting sportsmanship, the National Sports Festival fosters collaboration, friendship, mutual respect, and unity in diversity—its core objectives since its inception in 1973.
“With the arrival of the torch, Ogun State’s renewed dedication to national unity, youth development, and the celebration of our rich diversity through sports is reaffirmed,” he stated.
He concluded by expressing pride in Ogun State’s role as host, saying, “Hosting this prestigious event for the second time, we are honored to receive the Unity Torch. We are fully prepared to showcase our vibrant culture, hospitality, and the exceptional talents of our athletes.”
