Governor Sanwo-Olu orders immediate evacuation of waste across Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent accumulation of refuse in some areas.

The governor disclosed this in a statement posted on his social media handle on Thursday, assuring residents that the state government was taking urgent steps to address the situation.

According to him, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have intensified efforts to clear waste backlogs across affected communities.

Sanwo-Olu said additional trucks and personnel had been deployed to support the cleanup exercise, noting that residents should already be noticing improvements in waste collection and disposal.

“We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again,” he said.

The governor noted that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, stressing that managing such a volume requires extensive coordination and resources.

He, however, assured residents that the government remained committed to resolving the current challenges and restoring cleanliness across the state.

Sanwo-Olu also appealed to Lagosians to support government efforts by properly bagging their waste and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainage channels and on roads.
