Governors, FG, labour negotiating N100,000 minimum wage — AbdulRazaq
The chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, says state governors are engaging the Federal Government and organised labour in discussions aimed at reviewing the national minimum wage to about N100,000 per month.
AbdulRazaq made the disclosure on Friday in Lagos when he, alongside a few other governors, paid a Sallah homage visit to President Bola Tinubu. The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, led the federal government delegation at the meeting.
He said consultations were ongoing to reach an agreement on a wage structure that would improve workers’ welfare while remaining fiscally sustainable for both federal and state governments.
According to him, state governments recognise the need to enhance workers’ earnings in light of prevailing economic conditions, but must also ensure that any new wage framework does not place excessive strain on public finances.
“We are actively engaging with the Federal Government and organised labour to arrive at a wage structure that is fair to workers and sustainable for government finances,” AbdulRazaq said.
He added that the goal of the negotiations is to improve the living conditions of workers while ensuring that states are still able to meet their financial obligations and continue funding key development projects.
The NGF chairman stressed that policymakers must balance workers’ demands for higher pay with the fiscal realities facing subnational governments.
Nigeria’s current statutory minimum wage stands at N70,000 per month, following a recent upward review.
