Heroic Vozinha inspires Cape Verde to famous World Cup upset

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha was overcome with emotion after helping his country secure a historic 0-0 draw against World Cup favourites Spain in their opening Group H match at Atlanta Stadium.

As the final whistle sounded, cameras captured the 40-year-old veteran in tears as the significance of the result began to sink in. The draw marked one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and a landmark moment for the World Cup debutants.

Thousands of Cape Verdean supporters erupted in celebration, having backed their team with unwavering passion throughout the contest. Fans hugged, danced and sang as they savoured a result few had predicted.

The celebrations extended onto the pitch, where players embraced one another in jubilation. Even neutral spectators were swept up in the occasion, applauding Cape Verde’s spirited display against the reigning European champions.

Vozinha was the standout performer, producing a series of crucial saves to deny Spain and preserve a memorable clean sheet. His heroics earned him the Player of the Match award and cemented his place in Cape Verdean football history.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents,” Vozinha said after the match. “Unfortunately, they were not here. They passed away a few years ago. They were everything to me, everything in my life.”

The veteran goalkeeper also revealed his sadness that his mother was unable to witness the occasion in person. “She couldn’t be here because of visa issues. Because of the money required for the visa, we couldn’t arrange it in time. I would have loved for her to be here,” he said.

Reflecting on the team’s achievement, Vozinha credited Cape Verde’s strong sense of unity. “Our greatest weapon is our unity,” he said. “Everyone thought we came here just to enjoy our first World Cup, but we are here to compete, and we are here to fight for our country.”
