Man arrested over alleged plot to poison Ondo community stream

The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged attempt to contaminate a stream used as the main source of drinking water in Aponmu-Lona, Idanre Local Government Area.

A suspect, Philips Odefila, was reportedly caught in the act by residents and immediately handed over to security operatives for further questioning.

Reacting to the incident, the traditional ruler of the community, Chief Babalola Bolujare, said the incident occurred amid ongoing tensions following attacks by suspected hoodlums.

Bolujare explained that the invaders had earlier stormed the community, destroying cocoa farms and other economic crops belonging to residents.

He disclosed that a petition had been sent to the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services over the invasion by the armed group.

According to him, the police authorities had already ordered a probe into the earlier attacks before the latest incident involving the alleged poisoning attempt, adding that while the investigation was ongoing, Odefila was apprehended whilst allegedly tampering with the community’s water source, prompting his arrest and handover to the police. Two other suspects were later picked up in connection with the case.

The monarch urged law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed that the command had begun a probe into the matter but did not state the exact number of suspects in custody.
