Residents of Ido Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State have been thrown into mourning following the killing of a middle-aged woman, Olaitan Amire, by suspected assailants.

The deceased, a mother of three, was reportedly attacked and killed in her residence on Saturday night after an earlier attempt to set her house ablaze failed.

A relative of the victim, Dare Akinola, said the attackers first tried to burn down her apartment on Friday night but were unsuccessful after a passerby noticed flames coming from the building and alerted neighbours.

According to Akinola, residents quickly responded to the alarm and prevented the fire from causing major damage to the property.

He alleged that the assailants returned the following night and brutally attacked Amire, inflicting severe injuries on her head, face, legs and other parts of her body.

Akinola further claimed that after killing the woman, the suspects attempted to cover up the crime by arranging clothes and personal belongings over her body and placing a container of petrol nearby, apparently with the intention of setting the corpse on fire.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding a thorough investigation and the arrest of all those involved in the killing.

Akinola said the matter had been reported to the police, adding that two suspects had already been arrested and were being interrogated. Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Ekiti State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said he would provide details later.
