The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade, has congratulated the President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Dr. Ademola Are, on his election as the 1st Vice President of the Union of West African Rugby Federations.
Dr. Are, a key figure in Nigeria’s rugby revival, was elected alongside other executives in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Olopade described the victory as a testament to the progress made under Are’s leadership, noting that the recognition from the West African region reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in the sport.
“This is a major milestone for Nigerian rugby. With this position, Dr. Are can explore international collaborations to further develop the sport both locally and across the region,” he said.
The NSC boss emphasized the importance of Nigerian sports administrators engaging in international sports politics, stating that such roles elevate the country’s status and opportunities.
He also linked Are’s appointment to the RHINSE campaign, highlighting how Nigerians in key positions can attract international competitions that boost the country’s infrastructure and sports economy.
“The Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy is on track. This appointment strengthens Nigeria’s chances of hosting major tournaments, which drive infrastructural growth,” Olopade added.
He praised Are’s vision and innovation, recalling how the NRFF was the first federation to adopt the Sports Commission’s COO Initiative by appointing Tunde Delu as Chief Operating Officer—a move that has yielded positive results.
