The Ondo State Government has sanctioned a number of secondary school students over a viral “sign-out” video recorded after the completion of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The affected students, drawn from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School and CAC Grammar School, were seen in the video engaging in acts the authorities described as misconduct, sparking widespread reactions on social media.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology convened an emergency meeting with school administrators and education officials in Akure to determine appropriate disciplinary measures.
As part of the sanctions, the government ordered the indefinite withholding of the testimonials and WASSCE results of 17 identified students involved in the incident.
The ministry also directed that the names of the affected students be entered into disciplinary records maintained by their respective schools, while principals were instructed to establish formal misconduct registers.
In addition, senior members of staff in the affected schools were issued queries over alleged lapses in supervision, while students involved in the incident who are not in their final year have been ordered to leave the schools.
Reacting, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the state would not condone actions capable of tarnishing the image of schools or undermining discipline within the education sector.
While acknowledging students’ desire to celebrate the completion of their examinations, Ajibefun stressed that such celebrations must be conducted responsibly, as the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Akindele Ige, urged school authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar occurrences. Parents and the affected students have also been invited to the ministry for the issuance of disciplinary letters.
