Onyeka joins elite list as Coventry clinch championship title

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined the growing list of Nigerian players to have lifted the EFL Championship trophy, further cementing his place among the country’s notable football exports.
Coventry City were confirmed winners of the Championship on Sunday, with Onyeka playing a key role throughout the campaign as the club sealed promotion to the English Premier League.
The industrious midfielder was a consistent presence for Coventry City, contributing significantly to their successful push for the title with his energy, discipline, and tactical awareness in midfield.
Onyeka becomes one of the few Nigerians to achieve the feat since the competition was rebranded in 2004, highlighting the significance of his contribution to the club’s title-winning season.
He now joins a distinguished list of Nigerian players who have lifted the trophy in recent years, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing influence in the English second tier.
In the 2023/24 season, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho both achieved the milestone, while Nathan Tella was part of the title-winning squad in the 2022/23 campaign.
Other Nigerians to have won the Championship title include Bright Enobakhare and Carl Ikeme in the 2017/18 season, Sammy Ameobi in 2016/17, Danny Shittu in 2010/11, Shola Ameobi in 2009/10, and Eric Obinna in the 2005/06 season.
Onyeka’s latest achievement adds another chapter to Nigeria’s rich legacy in the Championship, as players from the country continue to make significant impacts across European football.
