Oyo govt rolls out plans for 2026 World Egungun Festival

The Oyo State Government has unveiled plans for the 2026 World Egungun Festival, with expectations of attracting over 18,000 participants, including cultural practitioners, tourists, and dignitaries.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, announced this during a press briefing in Ibadan, saying the event forms part of ongoing efforts by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde to boost cultural tourism and preserve indigenous heritage.
He said the festival will serve both cultural and economic purposes, noting that it is designed to promote Yoruba traditions while also generating revenue for the state through tourism and related activities.
According to him, the 2026 edition is scheduled for May 1 and 2 and will feature a symposium, cultural exhibitions, masquerade displays, traditional cuisine, music performances, and other artistic showcases.
He added that the first day will focus on scholarly discussions about the Egungun tradition, while the second day will host the grand cultural display involving local and international performers.
Stakeholders at the briefing described the festival as a major platform for showcasing Yoruba culture to a global audience and strengthening its relevance in contemporary creative industries.
They further expressed optimism that the event would position Oyo State as a key cultural tourism destination in Nigeria.
