Osun LG crisis: Group petitions IGP, DSS over alleged attack plot

A civil society organisation, the League of Peace Ambassadors, Humanity and Human Rights Advocates, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) over an alleged plot to disrupt peace in Osun State amid the ongoing dispute over local government leadership.
In a petition dated June 21, 2026, and signed by the organisation’s Director of Human Rights and Safety Department, Adeniyi Ayomide, the group said intelligence reports and recent developments pointed to a possible threat to public peace and order in parts of the state.
The organisation alleged that tensions had already been recorded in some communities, citing reported incidents in Ede, Ifelodun and Ila local government areas, where attempts to take control of council secretariats allegedly resulted in confrontations before security operatives intervened.
According to the petition, some individuals who purportedly emerged from the February 22, 2025 local government elections were allegedly planning coordinated activities across the state on June 22, 2026.
The group further claimed there were concerns over the alleged mobilisation of political supporters and suspected hoodlums from within and outside Osun State, including neighbouring Oyo State and the Niger Delta region.
It also alleged that the purported plans could involve coordinated attacks targeting individuals, destruction of public infrastructure, and possible vandalisation or burning of local government secretariats, offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), police stations, political party offices and other public facilities.
“We understand that the alleged activities may be carried out simultaneously across the 30 local government areas of the state. This prospect is deeply concerning and has compelled us to alert the appropriate security authorities before the situation deteriorates. As a civil society organisation committed to democratic governance, we firmly believe that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and constitutional means. Democracy thrives on respect for the rule of law, judicial processes and the will of the people, not through violence, intimidation or self-help,” the petition read.
The organisation appealed to the Nigeria Police Force to deploy adequate security personnel to critical public facilities across Osun State and ensure the arrest and prosecution of anyone found culpable.
