Otti commissions roads in Umuahia, names routes after JOJ Okezie, Uma Ukpai
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned several road projects across Umuahia North and South Local Government Areas as part of activities marking his third anniversary in office.
During the commissioning on Wednesday, the governor also renamed the Ahiaeke–Okwuta–Bende Road as JOJ Okezie Road, while the Tower–Onuimo Road was renamed Uma Ukpai Way in honour of elder statesmen from the state.
The projects commissioned include Orpet–Umuafai–Lodu–Ahiaeke–Ndume Road, Madonna Hospital Road, Justice Okoroafor Close and Library Avenue Road in Umuahia North, as well as Umubioko–Amakama Road, Nsukwe–Umuogo Road and the newly renamed Uma Ukpai Way in Umuahia South.
Speaking at the various commissioning sites, Otti thanked residents for their patience during the reconstruction process and said the projects were aimed at improving transportation and enhancing infrastructure in the state.
He said the roads were named after the late JOJ Okezie and Reverend Dr Uma Ukpai in recognition of their contributions to the development of Abia State.
“So, what we have come here today is to celebrate the completion of these roads. We also want to celebrate our fathers in this state who are no more,” the governor said.
Otti added that the reconstruction of the Tower–Onuimo Road was designed to ease traffic congestion and ensure visitors entering Abia State are welcomed with good road infrastructure.
Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, said many of the roads were previously in deplorable condition before the intervention of the state government, adding that the governor also approved the dualisation of the six-kilometre Tower–Onuimo federal road for the benefit of residents and motorists.
