Oyo govt declares Tuesday public holiday for Islamic New Year

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448 AH.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the state government recognised the significance of the occasion to the Muslim faithful.

According to the statement, Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD and remains one of the most important events in Islamic history.

The government urged residents to use the public holiday to reflect on the teachings of the Hijrah and pray for peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria.

Oyelade also called on citizens to embrace the spirit of solidarity, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the occasion offers an opportunity for renewed commitment to the collective well-being of society.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in our state and our nation,” the statement read.

Government offices and public institutions across the state are expected to observe the holiday, while essential services will continue to operate.
