Police arrest two over alleged production of counterfeit beverages in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspected producers of adulterated alcoholic beverages and recovered counterfeit drinks, chemicals and packaging materials used in their alleged operations.
The suspects, identified as Ikechukwu Okeke, 42, and Okeke Chukwuemeka, 38, were arrested by officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad and the Anti-Violent Crime Unit following credible intelligence on their activities.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were part of a syndicate involved in the adulteration and counterfeiting of various alcoholic beverages for distribution within and outside the state.
The command said the suspects allegedly confessed during interrogation and subsequently led investigators to a facility believed to be used for the production of the counterfeit products.
Items recovered from the facility included suspected adulterated alcoholic drinks branded as Seaman’s Schnapps, McDowell’s, Eagle Schnapps, Elliot Hot Drinks and Baileys Fresh Cream. Police also recovered chemicals suspected to have been used in the production process.
Other exhibits recovered include empty bottles, labels and packaging materials allegedly intended for the continued manufacture and distribution of the counterfeit beverages.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for the operation and warned individuals involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit consumable products to desist or face prosecution.
The police disclosed that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.
