The Oyo State Government has reiterated its determination to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) as it joined the global community to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day 2026.

Speaking during the event, held at Molete Primary Health Centre in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, described TB as a serious public health challenge with far-reaching social and economic consequences, stressing that the disease remains preventable and curable when detected early and treated appropriately.

Ajetunmobi further noted that the state government is committed to implementing evidence-based measures such as early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and enhanced community participation, adding that these efforts will be supported through sustained investments in primary healthcare services and broader health system improvements.

Referring to the 2026 theme, “Yes! We Can End TB!”, the commissioner emphasized the need for stronger collaboration and increased funding to address gaps in TB control, revealing that a significant number of cases still go undiagnosed.

While outlining key interventions being implemented by the state, including the decentralisation of TB services to primary healthcare centres, intensified case-finding through outreach teams, and the deployment of modern diagnostic tools to boost early detection and improve treatment success, she also urged residents to help reduce stigma associated with TB and to seek medical attention promptly, especially if they experience a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks.

As part of activities outlined for the day, Ajetunmobi flagged off the commencement of integrated health outreaches across all 33 Local Government Areas of the state, which will offer free screening, testing, and counselling services for TB, HIV, and malaria.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Kehinde Ayinde, disclosed that the state government had released counterpart funding to strengthen TB treatment programmes, amid calling on all stakeholders to contribute to the fight against TB in line with the national drive, “Led by Government, Powered by the People.”

Various stakeholders at the event, including international and local health organisations, commended the state government for its progress in TB control and pledged continued support toward achieving the complete eradication of the disease.
