Sanwo-Olu reveals reason for Opebi-Odo Iya Alaro Bridge delay

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has attributed the delayed opening of the Opebi-Odo Iya Alaro Bridge to the installation of a 25-metre steel monument designed to reflect the area’s cultural heritage.

Sanwo-Olu gave the explanation on Sunday during an unscheduled visit to the bridge to assess the progress of the installation by construction firm Julius Berger.

The governor said the monument was not part of the original bridge design but was conceived towards the final stage of construction. He explained that the additional feature had delayed the opening, which he had earlier projected for the end of September.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the monument is designed to reflect the area’s history as a cane market, with four steel structures representing the hands involved in cane weaving. He said the installation involved about 300 tonnes of steel at a height of approximately 25 metres.

The governor disclosed that the installation was 80 per cent complete, with three of the four steel components already assembled and installed. He added that work on the final component would begin before other proposed features were completed.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to exercise patience, stressing that the additional time was necessary to ensure the monument was safely installed before the bridge opened. He said the government would not compromise safety on a project intended to serve as a landmark infrastructure.

The governor also commended officials of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the construction workers for their efforts, while urging them to accelerate the remaining work. He acknowledged the delay, noting that the bridge had not opened as previously projected.

Sanwo-Olu said the bridge would improve commuting for motorists and enhance the surrounding corridor, adding that the monument could also make the location a destination for recreation, tourism and cultural heritage. He also assured residents that the bridge would be opened to traffic before Christmas.
