Senator Natasha calls for review of South African artistes’ visas

The lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called on the Federal Government and the Nigeria Immigration Service to review visa applications by South African artistes and their entourages in line with the principle of reciprocity.

Her intervention followed the controversy surrounding South African pop star Tyla’s cancelled Lagos concert and allegations of unfair treatment of Nigerian artistes amid recurrent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

In a statement on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed concern over reports that Nigerian singer Ayra Starr and members of her team were previously denied entry visas to South Africa, forcing the cancellation of their engagements.

“I call on the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Federal Government of Nigeria to review the visa applications of South African artistes and their entourages in accordance with the principle of reciprocity in foreign policy. If it is confirmed that Ayra Starr and her team were denied entry visas to South Africa, Nigeria should respond with equivalent measures until Nigerian citizens and artistes are accorded fair and respectful treatment,” she said.

The senator, however, said her position was not directed at Tyla personally but aimed at ensuring Nigeria’s diplomatic relations are guided by fairness and mutual respect.

She described reciprocity as a recognised diplomatic tool, arguing that discriminatory actions against Nigerians should attract corresponding consequences.

According to her, Nigeria must demonstrate that unjust treatment of its citizens abroad carries consequences while ensuring its foreign policy protects the dignity of Nigerians.

She urged the Federal Government to uphold mutual respect in its relations with other countries rather than allowing the relationship to remain one-sided.
