Tinubu converts TASUED to federal university

The Federal Government has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University.

This move makes TASUED the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district and strengthens the government’s commitment to advancing teacher education in Nigeria.

Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. Named after renowned activist and educator Dr. Tai Solarin, the institution has played a key role in teacher training and educational development.

President Bola Tinubu approved the transition on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for facilitating the takeover. He highlighted that the move honors the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a pioneer of free education in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to fostering education and leadership at Mayflower School in Ikenne.

The president also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in ensuring the university’s survival during a crisis in 2012.

TASUED’s conversion into a federal institution means it joins two other federal universities of education in the country: Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo. The transition is expected to require minimal federal investment due to the university’s already developed infrastructure.
