Ondo varsity strike persists as lecturers await FG-union deal implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch, says its ongoing strike will continue until the Ondo State Government fully implements the agreement reached with the unions.

The branch Chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in a telephone interview.

The strike involves academic and nonacademic unions across Ondo State’s three government-owned universities, with workers demanding the implementation of agreed terms, including the Federal Government-union agreement.

The development followed the state government’s announcement on Monday that it had reached an understanding with the striking unions on the full implementation of the agreement reached with the Federal Government.

Oshodi confirmed that the union leadership had reached an agreement with the state government on the implementation of the deal. He, however, said reaching the agreement was only the first step, as the union was waiting for the government to translate its commitments into concrete action.

“The state government and the union have reached an agreement on the implementation of the FGN-union agreement,” he said.

“However, we are still waiting for the implementation. That is when the strike will be called off,” Oshodi added.

Oshodi’s position indicates that the strike will remain in force until the union is satisfied that the commitments reached with the state government have been fully implemented.
