Tinubu meets service chiefs over rising security concerns
President Bola Tinubu on Monday held an emergency security meeting with top military and intelligence chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting, which began around 2:00 p.m., is the first item on the president’s schedule since his return to Abuja on Friday from Bayelsa State.
The high-level session comes amid growing security concerns following the decision by the United States Department of State to authorise the voluntary departure of non-emergency staff and family members from the Embassy of the United States, Abuja. The move was announced on April 8, 2026, citing a “deteriorating security situation” in parts of the country.
The meeting also follows a controversial military airstrike in Borno State that reportedly killed more than 100 civilians, intensifying scrutiny over ongoing security operations.
Those attending the closed-door meeting include the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Staff, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Also present is the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Meanwhile, the US advisory placed 23 of Nigeria’s 36 states under a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” warning, the highest risk category. Newly added states include Plateau State, Jigawa State, Kwara State, Niger State, and Taraba State.
