UN Peacekeepers Day: Nigeria Police pledge continued support for global peace
The Nigeria Police Force has pledged continued support for global peacekeeping operations as it joined the international community in commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid tribute to peacekeepers across the world for their courage, professionalism, sacrifice, and dedication to promoting global peace and security.
The police chief also honoured peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag, noting that their sacrifices continue to inspire efforts aimed at building a safer and more peaceful world.
Disu highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to international peace support operations, stating that officers of the Nigeria Police Force have served with distinction in several United Nations, African Union, and regional peacekeeping missions.
According to him, Nigerian police personnel deployed to conflict-affected areas have consistently demonstrated professionalism, expertise, and dedication, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to global peace and security.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Invest in Peace,” the Inspector-General stressed the need for sustained investment in peacebuilding, capacity development, strong institutions, technology, and international cooperation.
He noted that emerging security threats, including terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts, and violent extremism, require innovative and collaborative approaches to peace and security management.
Disu also emphasised the importance of equipping peacekeepers with the necessary skills, training, technology, and operational resources to address evolving security challenges effectively. He further acknowledged the contributions of female peacekeepers and called for greater participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
