UNGA81: Shettima urges new ECOWAS leadership to prioritise regional unity

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged the new leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission to prioritise regional unity and integration to accelerate development across West Africa.

Shettima made the call on Friday in New York, United States, when he received the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop (retd.), and his delegation on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Vice-President urged the new ECOWAS leadership to strengthen cooperation among member states and develop policies capable of improving the livelihoods of people across the sub-region.

He also called for greater private-sector participation in the proposed Lagos-Abidjan highway project, describing it as an important initiative for regional integration and economic development.

“Beyond your administrative duties, your leadership of the commission must make deliberate efforts to build bridges of friendship across the sub-region,” Shettima said.

He urged ECOWAS to strengthen engagement with emerging regional blocs, including the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

“I urge ECOWAS under your leadership to champion the cause of regional integration and strengthen the bonds of unity and friendship among our people,” he said.

Shettima congratulated Diop on his emergence as head of the commission, saying he assumed office at a challenging period that required greater cooperation and cohesion among countries in the region.

The Vice-President assured the ECOWAS president of Nigeria’s continued support, saying President Bola Tinubu would back efforts aimed at strengthening the regional organisation.
