VP Shettima to launch National Tractor Restoration Programme in Maiduguri

Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Sunday, June 8, 2025, officially launch the National Asset Restoration Programme in Maiduguri, Borno State, with a focus on reviving broken-down agricultural machinery to support mechanized farming and food security.
The launch, set to take place at the Borno State Agricultural Mechanization (BOSAMAN) Farm Centre, marks the commencement of the programme in the North-East, beginning with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI)’s Tractor Recovery Project.
The initiative, fully funded, supervised, and executed by NASENI in partnership with Machine and Equipment Corporation Africa Limited (MECA), aims to restore thousands of non-functional tractors across the country. It is a key component of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda to boost agricultural productivity and rebuild rural economies.
Vice President Shettima will be joined at the ceremony by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum; NASENI Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Khalil Suleiman Halilu; and other dignitaries.
According to available data, Nigeria currently has an estimated 55,000 broken-down tractors, with only about 7,000 to 10,000 in working condition. The NASENI-led restoration programme is designed to reverse this trend by refurbishing and upgrading these machines for immediate deployment.
Each tractor under the project is receiving a complete overhaul, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural enhancements, to ensure they meet the demands of modern agriculture.
The intervention is expected to significantly improve food production, strengthen agricultural value chains, and promote self-reliance through indigenous engineering solutions.
