Olubadan bans open grazing in Ibadan, threatens legal action against violators
By Adejayan Gbenga –
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja (Aruse I), has declared open cattle grazing illegal in Ibadanland, warning that violators will face arrest and prosecution under Oyo State law.
The monarch’s position was conveyed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Solomon Ayoade, following a meeting with members of the Olubadan-in-Council and executives of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja expressed concern over the persistence of open grazing despite existing laws banning the practice, describing it as unacceptable. He stressed that the palace would no longer tolerate insecurity, attacks on farmers or the destruction of farmlands.
He directed Mogajis, Baales and other traditional leaders to remain vigilant in their communities and ensure the safety of lives and property, warning that negligence could attract sanctions.
The monarch also urged residents to promptly report suspicious individuals, including suspected herdsmen and kidnappers, to the appropriate security agencies.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association, Pastor David Olatunji, lamented the rising attacks on farmers, alleging the destruction of farmlands and threats to families.
He said repeated reports to security agencies had not resulted in arrests or prosecutions and appealed to both the Olubadan and the Oyo State Government for urgent intervention.
The meeting was attended by members of the Olubadan-in-Council and other traditional leaders.
