Mahama honoured with Africa democracy award at Accra political summit

A continental organisation of political consultants has honoured the President of Ghana, John Mahama, with the Africa Democracy Award in recognition of his resilience in public life and ongoing commitment to democratic governance and constitutional rule.
The award was presented during the 8th Africa Political Summit and Democracy Awards on Thursday and Friday in Accra was held on the campus of University of Profesional Students, where policymakers, election experts, civil society actors, and political strategists from across the continent gathered to examine the future of democratic practice and political engagement.
The award was formally presented on behalf of the continental political consultants body by Tunde Rahman, a Senior Presidential Adviser to President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on the significance of the honour, the General Secretary of the organisation, Association of Political Consultants Africa (APC-Africa), Temitope Ajayi, also a senior aide to President Tinubu, said the council selected Mahama for his “extraordinary commitment to the consolidation of democratic governance in Africa” and described him as a “shining example of African statesmanship.”
Ajayi further noted that Mahama stood out for his democratic conduct during Ghana’s electoral transitions, highlighting that he voluntarily conceded defeat in a presidential election while in office.
He said that rather than plunge the country into crisis, Mahama accepted the outcome peacefully and subsequently spent years reorganizing his political base before making a comeback to active political leadership.
With this recognition, Mahama joins a list of past recipients that includes Kenyan President William Ruto, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The summit, themed “Reinventing political campaigns: strategy, technology, resourcing, and grassroots mobilization,” focused on strengthening democratic institutions, improving campaign practices, and exploring the role of technology and youth participation in African politics.
