APC demands investigation into alleged attack on Ataoja of Osogbo

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the state Police Command to investigate the alleged assassination attempt on the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, Larooye II.

The party made the call in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, following the monarch’s claim that armed hoodlums attacked his palace and shot sporadically in an attempt to kill him.

The monarch, at an event in Osogbo at the weekend, said the gunmen shot indiscriminately and that some of his aides sustained serious gunshot injuries.

Oba Olanipekun also said he had become increasingly concerned about security in Osogbo, adding that the attack on his palace occurred on the same day the chairman of the Accord Party was shot.

However, the APC said the allegation is a serious one that requires urgent and thorough investigation to identify those responsible and establish the true circumstances surrounding the incident.

Olabisi noted that the alleged attack, if true, does not portray the image of the state positively and therefore deserves prompt attention from security agencies.

He said, “It should also be of interest to right-thinking members of the public why the alleged assassination attempt on such a foremost Yoruba monarch was not reported at the nearest police station and, if it was reported to the police, why the police have kept sealed lips over an allegation of such magnitude”.

The APC also queried why such a grave allegation of an assassination attempt escaped the attention of both social and traditional media, urging media organisations with head offices or correspondents in Osun State to look into the matter.
